Dear Chooks, I am not overly fond of hunting eggs unless they are filled with chocolate, preferably Reese's...
The first time I made hot sauce, I was so excited. I am not a glutton for punishment (unlike my husband) when it comes to hot stuff, but I do enjoy a little hot sauce on occasion. So when I found a recipe, I had to try it.
For the first year, our pumpkins went crazy. In the previous years, we were lucky to get one or two. However, from three mounds we grew TEN pumpkins this year. That is a whole lot of pumpkin. Which brought me to the question of "What am I going to do with all of these pumpkins?!"
Homesteading is about being self-sufficient. You can make it as simple (growing a crop of tomatoes) or as complex (completely off grid) as you want.
There isn't much that is more satisfying than making and canning your own pickles/tomato sauce/salsa/jelly etc. However, unless you have a (*non-electric) pressure cooker, there are a lot of things you can't safely can without pickling. And in my opinion, there are some things that just shouldn't be pickled.
